Celebrate National School Lunch Week (October 13-19, 2008)

Have you noticed that kids love it when mom or dad (or any family member) joins them for lunch in the cafeteria?  It’s often an educational experience for us parents and caregivers, too!

Child nutrition specialist Dr. Daniel Raiten at NIH says that one of the most important strategies for parents to help kids stay healthy is to foster good eating habits at home. Because parents and caregivers play a key role in helping children learn the fundamentals of healthy living—eating well and staying active— by eating lunch with their child at school, they can see what kids do with the fundamentals they are being taught. Pressures outside the home often test the basis of their choices in new ways.

If kids are eating well inside the home, you may wonder if their diet at school really matters. The answer is a resounding “yes.” Research has shown that appropriate levels of fat, sugar, vitamins and minerals like iron contribute to development, learning and general behavior.

How did “National School Lunch Week” come about?  In recognition of the contributions of the National School Lunch Program to the health, education, and well-being of America’s children, the Congress in 1962 under President Kennedy, designated the week beginning on the second Sunday in October of each year as “National School Lunch Week”.  It is an opportunity to recognize food service professionals, school officials, and parents for their dedicated efforts to provide healthy foods to America’s children. This week, we recommit ourselves to encouraging children to make nutritious food choices and lead healthy lifestyles.

2008-2009 Reflections Theme: “Wow”

Our Reflections Program is underway! We are hoping for increased participation in this educational event. Reflections is a national program that encourages students to pursue artistic expression by submitting works of art in one or more of six areas: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting print making and collage), dance choreography and film/video production.

Entry forms and rules can be accessed at http://www.georgiapta.org/resources-student-reflections.html Alternatively, your child will be given a request form for a Reflections Packet if you prefer PTA to provide a complete hard copy. All entries must be submitted by October 16th. A Reflections workshop will be held on October 2 from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Encourage your child to participate in this valuable competition. State winners will exhibited at the High Museum!
